Addressing the Challenge of Climate Change - Perspectives from the Travel & Tourism Sector
Travel & Tourism is by its very nature fragmented. There is a significant need to present a united front on critical issues which threaten the industry and the economies which it supports. 2009 and the coming years are crucial to finalising a legally binding global agreement for greenhouse gas emissions' reduction targets. As the world's largest generator of jobs, exports and GDP activity, Travel & Tourism has an important role to play in creating a sustainable economy and global prosperity. WTTC, together with our partner UNWTO, will have a strong voice in Copenhagen to ensure that governments recognise the progressive steps that the Travel & Tourism industry has already taken towards responsible growth and development.
Key representatives of governments and industry, as well as experts, will illustrate the industry's ongoing efforts towards environmental sustainability in carbon emissions' mitigation and adaptation, and Travel & Tourism's progress in implementing the Bali Action Plan. This event is an important step towards advancing environmental sustainability within Travel & Tourism and the wider world. It also sets the groundwork for WTTC's future engagement with governments to promote the sustainable growth of the industry. Moreover, the event is critical to WTTC's plans, as demonstrated in the report 'Leading the Challenge on Climate Change', to showcase Travel & Tourism industry practices. WTTC intends to promote the best practices highlighted in this event and throughout the industry in a searchable best practice database.
