The WTTC Latin America Programme was run from January 1999 - December 2001. During this period WTTC worked with key players from the region to raise awareness of the economic importance of Travel & Tourism in Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.
Today, WTTC continues to recognize the importance of Travel & Tourism to this region. Latin America is rapidly becoming a major player in the Travel & Tourism industry, not only as a key potential tourism destination for business and leisure travellers but also as a generator of substantial numbers of travellers to other destinations.
In March 2006, Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President, WTTC participated in the Conselho Nacional de Turismo (Annual National Tourism Council meeting organized by the Ministry of Tourism) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 16 March 2006 where the WTTC TSA forecasts for Brazil were presented to all participants. In 2007, WTTC plans to deliver the national TSA forecasts to more countries in the region including Chile, Mexico and Argentina.
In 2009, for the first time, the Global Travel & Tourism Summit was held on the southern hemisphere in Florianópolis, Brazil from 14-16 May 2009.
