Over the last two years, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has witnessed the consolidation of Travel & Tourism growth on a global scale. New and unprecendented trends have emerged from global expansion of our industry in virtually every region of the world. Today, almost all organizations and destinations are reaping the benefits of this growth.

Over the past 15 years, the World Travel & Tourism Council has evolved to meet the rapidly changing global climate, which continues to influence the shape of the world's largest generator of jobs and prosperity - Travel & Tourism. Increased recognition of the strategic importance of Travel & Tourism across the globe has helped to develop new markets, which in turn has extended the global representation of WTTC membership to various different regions across the world.

Once again, this year the Travel & Tourism industry has shown great resilience in the face of natural disaster and fast evolving political, social and economic climates. Our research shows that in 2005, Travel & Tourism activity will account for some 10.6 percent of total GDP and 8.3 percent of total employment worldwide.

Despite the new light at the end of the tunnel, the events of the past few years have left their mark - not only on the balance sheets of industry players, but also in terms of changes in consumer demand and behavior. In an effort to adapt to the changing marketplace, the Travel & Tourism industry has had to restructure and refocus its efforts.

The events of 11 September, 2001 shocked the world, and profoundly affected the global Travel & Tourism industry. According to our annual Tourism Satellite Accounting (TSA) research, the fall in Travel & Tourism demand in the years 2001 and 2002 will result in a decline in world productivity equivalent to the loss of 10.5 million jobs compared to WTTC's earlier forecast. However, WTTC research also shows that the industry will begin recovery during 2002 and we forecast growth for 2003.
