WTTC’s Declaration for 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism sets out the Council’s vision for how Travel & Tourism can maximise its contribution to sustainable development. The UN’s Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ratified by 193 countries in 2015, provides a unique framework for driving sustainable growth. Travel & Tourism is recognised explicitly in three of the SDGs, but has an important part to play in the achievement of each one. However, while the potential for Travel & Tourism is great, the sector itself is a complex one with many different types and sizes of companies working in many different parts of the world under many different regulatory systems. WTTC’s Declaration emphasises that for Travel & Tourism to be sustainable it needs to thrive, and for it to thrive it needs three elements to be in place: people travelling, successful businesses, and responsible practices. The Manifesto contained within the Declaration sets out WTTC’s vision for how this can be achieved and how Travel & Tourism can be best placed to ensure its contribution to sustainable development is optimised.
2017 has been designated the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development by the United Nations. WTTC’s Declaration sets out our vision of how Travel & Tourism’s contribution to sustainable development can be maximised through ensuring people can travel freely, businesses are supported by policies that allow sustainable growth, and that the whole sector operates in a responsible way.
