Conservation Award Winner
&Beyond’s model of low-impact, high-yield wildlife tourism is based on our ethic of Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife, Care of the People. Born at &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, this has underpinned our initiatives for over twenty years.
Growing from 13 000 hectares of degraded farmland to 23 000 hectares of wilderness reserve, Phinda has been the site of many conservation firsts, including its incredible success with rhino. From an initial 26 animals, it has become one of South Africa’s most important white rhino reserves and the first reserve to take part in a historic black rhino range expansion project. Phinda’s rhino population is so healthy that the reserve has donated six white rhino for translocation to Botswana.
&Beyond’s research studies, including the Munyawana leopard project at Phinda, have led to changes in provincial legislation. Successful breeding projects include the rare suni and highly endangered Ader’s duiker, which thrive on &Beyond Mnemba Island, situated off the tip of Zanzibar. In partnership with conservation authorities in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, &Beyond has spread its conservations skills beyond Africa, carrying out the first successful relocation of gaur and reversing a local extinction
