Community Award Finalist
Since 2006, Thailand Community Based Tourism Institute (CBT-I) has worked with over 100 communities to craft inspiring experiences which celebrate aspects of Thai life, culture and nature which local people feel proud to share with guests.
Since 2006, the 10 most successful communities have welcomed over 25,000 guests, earning over $370,000 USD for local families and community organizations.
Services were delivered by over 600 trained community members. Communities contributed at least 10% of income to local projects including reforestation, micro-credit and cultural events.
Community members share experiences and resources at regular ‘CBT Network’ meetings, organized by CBT-I. Recognizing the importance of partnerships, CBT-I also provide regular training for tour operators and guides, government and NGO staff.
This small, committed team of 6 staff and 10 volunteers have redefined the role of local community members in Thai tourism, influenced government policy and provided a blueprint for CBT development in the region.
