Misool Eco Resort is an exclusive dive resort and conservation centre located in the southern part of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The resort is built on a private island, which is the site of a former shark finning camp. The surrounding 1220 sq km is protected by a No-Take Zone, established together with the local community in 2005. The area, which is nearly twice the size of Singapore, is patrolled by a team of local Rangers and two dedicated patrol vessels. All fishing, shark finning, turtle hunting, and egg collection is strictly prohibited inside this area.
This No-Take Zone directly involves the community in safeguarding the future of their own marine resources. Tourism offers a sustainable livelihood decoupled from the extraction of marine resources. Our 120 staff members, most of whom are from the local village and support extended families on their wage, are all ambassadors of ecotourism.
