Kelly Craighead is the Executive Director of the National Travel and Tourism Office within the International Trade Administration. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Craighead served as the President and Managing Director of the Democracy Alliance (DA). DA is a first of its kind organization founded in 2004 that pioneered an innovative model of collaborative philanthropy for its membership comprised of business leaders and philanthropists. From 2004-2014, Ms. Craighead provided the essential management capacity necessary to evolve the DA from its earliest start-up phase to the leader it has become, generating since its inception hundreds of millions of dollars for progressive non-profits and allied organizations.
Ms. Craighead also served as a U.S. Commissioner to UNESCO, was a member of the American Association of Association Executives, and is a founding board member and adviser of Business Forward, a trade group that works with the White House to engage thousands of business leaders from all sectors each year.
Ms. Craighead served as a member of the White House staff from 1993 to 2000, and was commissioned as a Deputy Assistant to the President, advising both President Clinton and the First Lady on a range of domestic and international activities and special initiatives.
Ms. Craighead started her career in the private sector as a National Sales and Marketing Manager for USA Hosts, a nationwide destination management firm, driving business development with Fortune 500 companies and national trade organizations. Ms. Craighead received her B.A. in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico, and lives in Washington, DC, with her husband and two children.
