Sustainability is a key pillar for all the Travel & Tourism community, and at the WTTC Global Summit 2015 we have an opportunity to demonstrate our sector’s commitment to giving something back to the city of Madrid, its residents and visitors.
Tourism Cares, in association with the World Travel & Tourism Council and Madrid Destino, will welcome all Summit delegates and local representatives of the tourism community on the morning of 14 April, 2015, to revitalise two important cultural icons: Retiro Park and the Barrios de Las Letras, in support of a message of volunteering and sustainability.
14 April/ 11.30am - 5pm (break for sandwich lunch)
Opening remarks commence 11.30am in Retiro Park.
Delegate transportation provided from the Summit Hotels at 10.45, meet in lobby at 10.30. Lunch, water and all event materials supplied.
Retiro Park, a green oasis in the centre of Madrid of over 300 acres (125 hectares)and is home to over 15,000 trees. The Park is not only the lungs of Madrid, but also offers cultural, leisure, and sporting activities. It is part of the site of the Retiro and Prado which has recently entered the World Heritage preliminary list as a Cultural Landscape. The value of this extraordinary urban landscape lies in the unique unity of the whole – a veritable mosaic of its various elements showcasing very different periods of history. To help the Parks & Gardening Centre Department, volunteers will assist in a massive effort, planting 2,500 common ivy plants in the garden.
In addition, a small group will also spend the afternoon in the Barrio de Las Letras, a district in Madrid famous for bronze quotes cemented in the streets, from Cervantes, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo, and other masters of Spain’s most beloved literature - one of the most photographed attractions in the city. Heavy foot traffic has damaged the quotes and volunteers will work alongside experts to clean and restore the bronze passages.
