Masaru Onishi was born on 19 May 1955 in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from Tokyo University with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, he joined Japan Airlines in April 1978. He started his career with Japan Airlines in the Heavy Maintenance Department in Narita Maintenance Center. He also received the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate Class 1 for Boeing 747. He was appointed President of Japan Airlines Co., Ltd, in February 2010 and spearheaded the company’s unprecedented scale of corporate restructuring. In January 2012, Onishi was elected Representative Director and Chairman of Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. He took on the role of Chairman in February 2012, and Japan Airlines relisted on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on 19 September 2012. He was appointed Chairman of Japan Airlines Co., Ltd, in April 2014.
