Travel & Tourism Economy GDP

The broadest measure of the economic contribution of the Travel & Tourism sector. It records the activity of traditional Travel & Tourism providers (eg lodging, transportation, etc), plus tourism-related investment, public spending and export of goods. It includes both the direct effects and the indirect effects via the supply chain of Travel & Tourism spending.

Travel & Tourism Direct Industry GDP

The narrowest concept which measures the value added of the traditional Travel & Tourism industries, excluding any indirect effects generated throughout the supply chain and all tourism-related investment, collective public spending and export of tourism-related goods.

Travel & Tourism Economy Employment

Covers the jobs generated by Travel & Tourism Economy GDP, the broadest measure of Travel & Tourism’s employment impact.

Travel & Tourism Direct Industry Employment

Covers the jobs generated by Travel & Tourism Direct Industry GDP, the narrowest measure of Travel & Tourism’s employment impact.

Personal Travel & Tourism

Includes all personal spending by residents on Travel & Tourism services (accommodation, transport, entertainment, meals, etc) and goods (both durable and non-durable) used for Travel & Tourism activities. Spending may occur before, during or after a trip and covers all Travel & Tourism – both domestic and international.

Business Travel

Expenditure by government and corporations on goods and services (accommodation, transport, entertainment, meals, etc) for employee business travel purposes – both domestic and international.

Government Travel & Tourism Expenditure

Includes current expenditure made by government to provide or support Travel & Tourism. Excluded are public employee travel spending (which is included under business travel) and capital spending (which is included under Travel & Tourism investment spending). Government Travel & Tourism expenditure can be either individual or collective. Individual government Travel & Tourism spending is directly linked to visitors, such as cultural (eg museums) or recreational (eg national parks) facilities provided by government. Collective government Travel & Tourism spending is made on behalf of the ‘community at large’, such as tourism promotion, aviation, administration, security services, resort area sanitation services, etc.

Capital Investment

Includes fixed investment expenditure by Travel & Tourism service providers and government agencies to provide facilities, capital equipment and infrastructure for visitors.

Visitor Exports

Expenditure by international visitors on goods and services within the economy. Such inbound tourism spending includes (from the balance of payments accounts) both travel spending and spending on passenger transport services provided by the nation’s firms to non-residents.

Other (non-visitor) Exports

Includes consumer goods (such as clothing, electronics or petrol/fuel) exported for ultimate sale to visitors, or capital goods (such as cars, aircraft or cruise ships) exported for use by Travel & Tourism providers abroad.

Travel & Tourism Demand

The aggregation of all Travel & Tourism spending within the economy (ie the sum of personal, business, government, investment, visitor export and other export Travel & Tourism spending). Travel & Tourism Demand less the value of imported Travel & Tourism goods and services (essentially residents’ and firms’ spending on travel abroad and passenger transport provided by foreign firms) equals Travel & Tourism Economy GDP.

International Visitor Arrivals

Includes all non-resident visitors – overnight, same-day and cruise passengers staying overnight on ships in ports.

Overnight Visitor Arrivals

Only includes those international visitors who stay at least one night (ie same-day and cruise passengers are excluded).

US dollar billion, at current prices and exchange rates.

2000 US$ bn

US dollar billion, expressed at 2000 prices and exchange rates. This series excludes the effect of price changes and therefore allows for real (volume) changes to be determined.

Real growth (%)

The annual percentage change in the 2000 US$ bn series.

% share

The share of Travel & Tourism spending or employment in the equivalent economy-wide concept in the published national income accounts or labour market statistics.

Personal Travel & Tourism spending is compared with all consumer spending;
Business travel spending is compared with GDP;
Government Travel & Tourism expenditure is compared with all government consumption;
Travel & Tourism capital spending is compared with all fixed investment spending;
Visitor and non-visitor exports are compared with exports of goods and services respectively; and
Travel & Tourism Demand is compared with the sum of GDP and all imports of goods and services.
